What we do
The Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) serves as the Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) senior authority related to Information Management and Technology (IMT).
Some of our work
- advising Deputy Ministers on IMT strategy and policy matters and ensuring that strategy and policy implementation is undertaken within the GNWT in a timely and consistent manner;
- working with stakeholders to ensure that IMT investments, assets, and operations support the business goals of the GNWT in an effective, efficient and economical manner;
- providing day-to-day guidance to all stakeholders regarding IMT strategy, security and policy implementation; and
- representing Northern interests on Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) and Broadband related matters.
Information Security
The Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) play a lead hand in ensuring our information resources are safe and secure though the development of policies, standards and programs that protect sensitive and personal information.
Within the OCIO, the Information Security Team provide guidance and support to help securely deliver government programs. We promote a risk based approach to information security and review programs, plans and processes to assist government in appropriately managing the risks to the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information collected from the public, to serve the public. The information security team support the OCIO’s responsibilities of developing security policy, architecture and standards and provide specialist consulting to strategic government projects and service innovation initiatives.
The team also provides information security awareness on best practices, emerging trends and cyber threats to ensure government’s policies, architecture and standards appropriately address current and emerging risks to help departments supporting them in their duties.
For departments we also play an advisory role on information security incident handling and any investigations or forensics needed to ensure they are properly handled and understand our enterprise risks.

Service Innovation Strategy
The Service Innovation Strategy (SIS) vision is to improve service delivery to NWT residents, businesses and visitors through the use of technology to:
- Expand access to programs and services;
- Improve efficiency and effectiveness of internal operations, including use of more government-wide solutions;
- Improve service delivery, decision making analysis and planning;
- Create consistent and realistic technology standards; and
- Enhance information management and technology knowledge and skills
The Government of the Northwest Territories Mandate: 2016-2019 supports the GNWT’s commitment to creating easier access to online programs and services through stronger government and stakeholder collaboration.
How satisfied are residents and businesses with GNWT Services?
The GNWT participates in two national surveys that track resident and business satisfaction with government service delivery.
This research helps the GNWT monitor performance over time, develop ways to improve service experience, increase client satisfaction with government services access, and introduce new service delivery methods that meet the changing needs of NWT residents and businesses.
