Solid Waste Management Regulation
Regulations and resources for Municipal Solid Waste management in Northwest Territory communities.
Municipal Solid Waste management is the collection, transport and disposal of waste away from the residential area, and waste prevention and minimization. It is the responsibility of community governments to manage their solid waste disposal and solid waste facilities.
The GNWT developed Guidelines for the MSW facilities which outline the planning, design, operation and maintenance of solid waste facilities. The Guidelines are intended to provide protection of groundwater, surface water and to have proper management of nuisances associated with the landfill operations. Topics in the Guidelines include:
- Wastes characteristics affecting landfill design,
- Site selection and siting criteria,
- Design and construction,
- Waste collection procedures,
- Operations and performance monitoring,
- Recycling of various waste,
- Decommissioning and post-commissioning,
- Contingency and mitigation planning, and
- Record keeping and reporting.
Resources
The GNWT has developed additional guidance documents for specific types of waste that are often disposed of in solid waste facilities.
