Order a Marriage Certificate

If your marriage took place in the Northwest Territories and has been registered, you can order a marriage certificate. This page explains who can apply, what forms and fees apply, and how to submit your request.

Make sure you can order a certificate

You can order a marriage certificate if you are any of the following:

• A person whose name appears on the marriage registration. 
• A legal representative of either party. 
• A parent or guardian of a person who was under 18 at the time of marriage. 
• A child of the marriage who needs the certificate for legal purposes such as proving parentage, age, or birthplace. 
• A person authorized in writing by either party. 
• A person who needs the certificate for court, adoption, or estate settlement. 
• An officer of the Crown or a government department approved by the Director of Vital Statistics. 

Check the prerequisites

A certificate can only be issued if the marriage took place in the Northwest Territories and has already been registered. 

Standard marriage certificate

Includes:

• Full legal name of both spouses
• Birth places of both spouses
• Date of the marriage
• Place of the marriage
• Registration details

Restricted Photocopy

This is a copy of the original marriage registration.

You must provide a reason to request it.

The Registrar General will decide whether to release it.

1. Decide which certificate type you need.
2. Start the online application or download the Application for Marriage Certificate form.
3. Complete the appropriate sections.
4. Submit your application and fee using the method you choose.
5. Keep a copy of your application for your records.

• Restricted Photocopy: $39
