Overview
You can order a birth certificate if the birth was registered in the Northwest Territories, including births that occurred in what is now Nunavut before April 1, 1999. This page explains how to order a birth certificate for a birth registered in the Northwest Territories, who can apply, and which certificate types are available.

Make sure you can order a certificate
You can order a birth certificate if you are:
- The person named on the birth registration.
- A parent listed on the birth registration.
- A legal representative with the proper documentation.
- A child or grandchild of the person whose birth is registered.
- Someone with written authorization from the person or the parents.
- A person who needs the certificate for court, adoption, or estate purposes.
- A government or Crown representative acting for official purposes.
Confirm the birth is registered in the NWT
- You can order a certificate for a birth registered in the Northwest Territories. This includes births that occurred in Nunavut before April 1, 1999.
- The birth must already be registered. If the birth is not yet registered, use Register your child’s birth.

Birth certificate with parent information
Recommended for:
- Newborns and children under 16
- Passport applications
- Programs that require proof of parentage
Includes:
- Child’s full name, date and place of birth
- Gender
- Registration details
- Parent names and birthplaces
Birth certificate without parent information
Includes everything above except parent information.
Restricted Photocopy
This is a copy of the original birth registration.
You must provide a reason to request it.
The Registrar General will decide whether to release it.

- Decide which certificate type you need.
- Start the online application or download the Application for Birth Certificate form.
- Complete the appropriate sections.
- Submit your application and fee using the method you choose.
- Keep a copy of your application for your records.
