The Adult Literacy and Basic Education (ALBE) program supports residents in building foundational reading, writing, math, and digital skills. Courses are offered through community learning centres and partner institutions with flexible schedules to fit work and family life.

Whether you’re preparing for further training, employment, or everyday life, ALBE provides approachable pathways to upgrade skills at your own pace. Financial and academic supports may be available through community programs and territorial initiatives.

ALBE is designed for adult learners in the Northwest Territories. You may be eligible if you meet the following:

• Resident of the Northwest Territories
• 18 years of age or older (or not currently enrolled in K–12)
• Complete a placement assessment to determine your starting level

Applying is straightforward and can be done in person or online.

1. Contact your nearest community learning centre.
2. Book a placement assessment and discuss goals with an advisor.
3. Choose courses and confirm schedule and start date.
4. Complete registration and, if applicable, submit funding forms.

No formal diploma is required to begin. Your placement assessment will help determine the right level. Bring the following if available:

• Government-issued ID
• Any recent school transcripts or assessments (optional)
• Contact information for follow-up
